Dose of Art #169: Carl Hofverberg – Trompe l´oeil 1737 (1737)

Carl Hofverberg was a Swedish painter whose most famous work is this one. In fact, he didn’t make any other like it. He did paint some altarpieces in Jämtland and some neighboring counties, but he was foremost a military man. Given the subject of this Trompe l´oeil, this shouldn’t come as a surprise; it not only contains two pistols (made by master B. Mård at the Jönköping weapon factory), but also an almanac, a blueprint of a fort and a drawing of a war scene. It is very detailed, and especially the wood looks incredibly realistic.
