Trompe-l’œil is French for ‘deceiving the eye’, and that is exactly what Pere Borrell del Caso tries to do. The boy – as a subject for a traditional portrait – steps out of the painting looking to the outside world with amazement. The title seems to indicate that he is not so much escaping the closed world of the painting but the criticism of the people (museum visitors, art critics) commenting on it.
