Clara Peeters was born in Antwerp and probably the most famous Flemish woman of the 17th century. Little is known about her early life and there are no records of apprenticeship or in any of the Guild records. Her works, however, are clearly recognizable because she signed them with either Clara Peeters or Clara P.
Her signature in this painting can be seen on the side of the knife on the table. Besides the food mentioned in the title, there are dried figs, butter and bread to be seen. If you look carefully you can see her reflection in the pewter lid of the earthenware jug.
