Dose of Art #107: Arnold Böcklin – Self-Portrait with Death as a Fiddler (1872)

It is interesting to see how painters portrait themselves in their paintings. It is like an early version of our ‘selfies’. Böclin was a Swiss symbolic painter who after the death of his young daughter painted a couple of paintings on the theme, one of which is this self-portrait. Although death lurks in the background, he steals our attention away from Böcklin, reminding us that he is always close by.
